A thousand data centers in a keychain.
Scripta Manent LLC develops archival data storage written at the scale of single atoms. Information is recorded in the chemical bonds of fluorographane, a two-dimensional material, where it stays put without power and without refresh. The goal is long-term archives that are vastly denser, cheaper to keep and more durable than today's tape and disk.
The company builds on research that began with the founder's 2013 publication on data storage in single-layer fluorographane and is now carried forward with university and national-laboratory partners in New Mexico. Its business model is licensing the technology.
